How to transfer a domain

Move your domain to Domaintico safely — unlock it, get the auth code, and complete the transfer without downtime.

Before you start

  • The domain must be older than 60 days (ICANN rule for most TLDs).
  • It must be unlocked at your current registrar.
  • You need the Auth Code / EPP Code.
  • Access to the registrant email address is required for approval.
Good news: Website and email usually continue working during transfer if nameservers stay the same.

Step-by-step

Check eligibility

Make sure the domain is not within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. Also confirm it is not under a registry lock or dispute.

Unlock the domain

Log in to your current registrar and disable the Registrar Lock. This allows the domain to be transferred.

Get the Auth (EPP) code

Request your domain’s Authorization Code (also called EPP code). It may be displayed in your dashboard or sent to your email.

Start transfer at Domaintico

Go to Transfer page, enter your domain, and provide the Auth code when prompted.

  • Review transfer pricing (includes 1-year renewal for most TLDs).
  • Complete checkout securely.

Approve the transfer

You’ll receive a confirmation email at the registrant address. Approve the transfer to speed up the process.

Wait for completion

Transfers can take several days depending on the registry and current registrar. Once complete, the domain will appear in your Domaintico dashboard.

Will my website go offline?

In most cases, no. If you keep the same nameservers during the transfer, DNS stays unchanged and your website/email continue working.

Best practice: Do not change nameservers during transfer unless necessary.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to unlock the domain before starting transfer.
  • Entering an incorrect Auth code.
  • Not approving the confirmation email.
  • Trying to transfer within 60 days of registration.
  • Changing nameservers unnecessarily during transfer.

Troubleshooting

I didn’t receive the approval email.
Check spam/junk folder. Confirm that the registrant email at your current registrar is correct. You may need to update it before retrying.
The transfer was rejected.
Common reasons include wrong Auth code, domain lock still enabled, or domain within 60-day restriction. Fix the issue and restart the transfer.
Does transfer extend my domain?
For most TLDs, yes — the transfer adds one additional year to your expiration date.
